तेरे बिना ज़िन्दगी से कोई शिकवा

A particular phrase in this song caught my attention as I listened to it recently (I first listened to it when the movie got released, in 1975, when my knowledge of Hindi was a lot more rudimentary than what it is today):

तुम गर साथ हो, मंज़िलों की, कमी तो नहीं

The lyrics describe how a human being can feel empowered in another's presence, a powerful sentiment: "If you are with me, there is no limit to where we can go".

फिर भी तुमको चाहूँगा

Bollywood lyricists are good at making use of metaphors and similes. Observe what male sings:

1. You are as important to me as air is to breath (life)
2. I look for you as the feet look for the ground (for stability)

If you take the meaning in a literal way, you can run into trouble!

ज़ालिमा

Good melody. If you catch on to the melody once, you feel like listening to it over and over again.

आज जाने की ज़िद न करो

A powerful, and deep, sentiment is expressed in this song. It appears that the female lover is pleading that the lover must not leave ... but, the pleading can be between any two human beings, particularly if the intensity of the sentiment is very strong and deep: ... हाय मर जाएंगे, हम तो लुट जाएंगे ... (I'll die if you leave, I'll be devastated ...)

Lyrics are rendered with almost every word getting its full import by the manner in which it is sung.

सनम रे

Nice lyrics through which the male lover describes his love. Arijit Singh's voice seems to add a special touch; equally pleasant is the tabla accompaniment.

जलते दिये

Nice love song that has in it some irony: The girl wishes that she is with her lover; but, the boy seems to disagree. (As of this blog post, I have not seen the movie).

The lyricist has used the lamp's light metaphor to describe the female's love; the male uses the same metaphor to point out that the flames of a lamp can also burn, create stains, ...

Beautifully woven lyrics.

गेरुआ

This song portrays love with several metaphors, some of which are highlighted below:

1. "... wherever we met, time stood still." Time stood still is a sensation many poets have written about; the particular manner Deepak Chopra describes this feeling regarding love comes to mind.
2. "Forgetting the [rest of the] world, I have met you. This wish has come forth of my heart ... that you give me — i.e., my life — the gerua color ...". Color is how many people describe liveliness, equating colorlessness with lack of life.
3. "... I am the caravan, you are the destination to which every path leads." Bollywood lyricists equate the state of love to a desirable destination including, of course, the ultimate destination of reaching God.

Nice music, invites repeated listening.

ನನ್ನ ನಿನ್ನ ಉಸಿರೊಂದಾಗಿ ... ನಾನುಸಿರಾಡಿದೆ

This is a Kannada adaptation, by one of my friends, of the song साँस में तेरी साँस मिली तो from the Yash Chopra movie, जब तक है जान.

In this song, the female lover expresses her feeling thus: ...

... मतलबी जहां, मेहरबान हो तुम

सुन रहा है न तू? (Female voice)

I have not seen the movie आशिकी 2, but the adaptation of this song by a TV serial — पवित्र रिश्ता — is impressive.

रसके भरे तोरे नैन, सावरिया

Male lover pleads to the female not to make him restless, by describing her eyes as full of रस, love.

न जाने क्या हो गया है तुम्हे देखकर

Lilting tunes are a specialty of this song while it expresses feelings of romantic love.

आजा रे परदेसी

This is a second song I have encountered recently that uses the phrase पंथ निहार to describe the act of waiting for someone by looking at the road on which the expectant person would come. The first one is मेरे जनम मरण के साथी.

तुम ही हो

Nice melody. Declaration of love.

मेहँदी है रचनेवाली, हाथों में गहरी लाली

The video you see is an illustration of how to dance to the song, by the famous Bollywood choreographer Saroj Khan. It is sung to a new bride — बन्नो — as she prepares herself for the wedding.



The original picturization of the song on Karishma Kapoor, however, has a somewhat different melodrama woven into the song.

मुहब्बत की झूटी कहानी पे रोये

This song came to my attention when I looked for some Bollywood songs in the raag ♫दरबारी कनाडा. I had just previously blogged on मनो बुद्धि अहंकार by Pt. Jasraj, and you can feel the intensity of the emotion in both the songs, thanks to some unique property of the raag (that I don't know).

मैं शायर तो नहीं

An interesting description how romantic love can trigger other actions. In this case, the poet describes the male lover as having become a poet (शायर), a lover (आशिक), a friend (दोस्त), a respecting (बंदगी) person, etc.

There is a subtle double entendre in this song; for a cursory observer, it might appear that the dancer is the object of the male lover; not so, and he is referring to another girl; this fact becomes evident if you know the story.

Bollywood excels in weaving hummable music into stories somewhat unique to the times.

ओ सजना, बरखा बहार आयी

The female lover declares her love through singing in the rain. You can, however, sense a certain pure innocence in her singing.

ಮನಸೇ ಒಂದು ಸಾರಿ ಕೇಳು

Although there is not yet a full music video of this song on the web, you can understand that the lovers are trying to express their love for each other. The girl is so confident of the boy's love that she even declares, translated:

... In every birth, I'd pray to God that you be my lover ...
